Notre-Dame Church in Dijon

Iglesia de Notre-Dame de Dijon

Iglesia de Notre-Dame de Dijon

The city of Dijon offers interesting treasures from an architectural standpoint, and the church of Notre-Dame is a good example of this. It is located on Place Notre-Dame, just a few minutes from the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy.

It is a church dating from the 13th century and of Gothic style. Specifically, it was built in 1230 and is one of the important architectural landmarks in the city. Historians have not been able to identify the name of the architect in charge of its construction, although it is known that in 1865 it was restored by the famous architect Jean Charles Laisné, who carried out improvement work on the sculptures and on the lantern tower.

Inside the church we can see the statue of Notre-Dame de Bon Espoir, popularly known as the Black Madonna, as well as the Chapel of the Assumption. We can see different levels of the choir as an interesting interior feature, and on the outside, up to 51 gargoyles can be observed on the side walls and on the walls of the apse, works by various sculptors such as Pascal, Chapot, Corbel, among others. Curiously, the church clock has several automatons, known as Jacquemart and Jacqueline, along with their two children, who are responsible for striking the bells.

It is possible to visit the Notre-Dame church in Dijon from 8:30 in the morning every day until the mid-afternoon, although this will depend on the time of year and the Mass schedules, which are also recommended for enjoying the experience.
