Killorglin, a small town in County Kerry

Killorglin
This time we return to the County Kerry area to discover a small town, in size and population, but one that is very busy at certain times of the year. It has a distinctive charm, embodied by its marvelous scenery, and is considered the gateway to the Ring of Kerry, today we are going to explore the town of Killorglin.

Killorglin is one of the most active places in all of County Kerry, with several tourist hostels in the Dromin Hill area. There, you can take part in leisure activities such as kayaking (sea kayaking and rappelling), rock climbing, camping, canoeing, hiking, mountaineering, sailing, and many more.

Searching for history across its landscape, you can find the ruins of Conway Castle, a former manor house that today retains only one of its walls. Nevertheless, these stone ruins hold a great deal of the history of this defensive fortress, which dates back to the 14th century and was subjected to continuous destruction and reconstruction until the mid-19th century.

In the city center, we can find its greatest commercial activity. A series of buildings stands out, belonging to the Italian-Irish entrepreneur Charles Bianconi from the 19th century. These buildings were famous for being guesthouses in the middle of that same century, and they remain today for the enjoyment of tourists.

But if the town of Killorglin is known for anything, it is for the Puck Fair, the oldest traditional fair in all of Ireland (in an upcoming post, we will delve deeper into it). This event, held in August and lasting three days, brings together young and old at a livestock fair, mixed with culinary tradition and Irish fun.

A good time to visit another of those towns that form part of the charm of County Kerry. Taking advantage of our attendance at the Puck Fair, we can get to know this small town that radiates the typical Irish hospitality to anyone who wishes to visit it. So, there you have it. Take advantage and stroll through the streets of Killorglin.
